I’m embarrassed to admit that I own three sets of dining chairs. How did this happen? It all started with the…
Grey Budget Dining Chairs
When we first moved in, we were buying a lot of new furniture. Dining chairs were one of the last things we ended up buying, and by then, we were ready to just be done with furniture shopping. Since we’d spent so much money recently, we just wanted something affordable. We bought simple, budget-friendy, light grey chairs (ignore the cat).
But after living with them a while, they felt thin and a little too cheap. They also blended in with our very practical (easy to clean) table, which is also grey. Overall, there was too much grey in the room and not enough personality in the chairs.
So I kept my eyes open for new dining chairs! From time to time I would check the classifieds for chairs, but most of what I found seemed too formal…
or too… 90s…
…for the feeling I was going for in the room. Until the magical day when I found the…
Wood Bistro Dining Chairs
A döner kebap place in a nearby village was replacing their seating, and all they wanted was ten euro a chair!
Anyone else hear angels singing? I was immediately attracted to their natural wood color and clean lines. Mmm! And that naturally weathered look that comes with years of use.
These would also make a nice base if I wanted to do refinish them later with paint, stain, or something crazy like decoupage. And since they’re not upholstered, they clean really easily. Very useful when you’re working around food!
I don’t usually like the orange oak color, but there’s something so light, pretty, and unassuming about these chairs. They look so airy with those curtains, and the color ties into a couple minor details in the room that carry the same tone. So… why do I now have three sets of chairs?
Well, apparently the rest of the household didn’t find these chairs as dreamy as I did. BoyfriendMan does not have the same comfortable layer of natural booty padding as I do, and he eventually told me that the chairs were too uncomfortable for him. D’oh!
Several months later we were at a thrift store, and we came across these…
Purple Art Deco Dining Chairs
When I first saw these chairs, I loved their unique shape, color, and minimalist, almost art deco design. BoyfriendMan liked them too, which was
shocking because we rarely agree on furniture a nice surprise!
But I had my reservations.
I liked the reddish-purple color a lot, but I worried that the purple and black would be too dark and clash with the rest of the room. We took a picture and left the store, but I continued thinking about the chairs. I would sit in the dining room and look at the picture. Then look up at the room. Then look at the picture.
Eventually, I thought “What the hell?” and went back for the damn chairs. Here they are in the room:
They don’t look terrible, and the purple matches an art print we have on the other side of the room. The black does have a heavy presence. I thought about tearing them apart and spray painting the metal a different color, but before I sped away with that train of thought, I made a terrible discovery. I hadn’t noticed at the thrift store, but the chairs smelled.
Like musty cigarette smoke.
One sunbath and three rounds of baking soda and vacuuming later, the smell lingered. I learned a valuable lesson that day: Always smell things before you buy them secondhand! If you see a pink-haired freak sniffing things on your next thrift store visit, you’ll know it’s me. Come say hi.
Dining Chair Situation Today
I sadly banished the purple chairs to the garage and happily hauled the wooden chairs back into the dining room. I do think the wood chairs look best in the room, so I wasn’t sad to see their return. We picked up some kinda-ugly-but-oh-well-that’s-compromise chair pads at Ikea, so even my boyfriend’s butt is happy.
The plan is to get all these chairs out of the garage soon. We’ll be purging stuff during our upcoming move anyway. I might hold on to a couple of those purple chairs and give them another round of TLC. Maybe they’ll come in handy at the next place we live.
Which Design Would You Choose?
Here’s all the different chair photos again. Which chairs would you choose for this room, and why? Have you ever waffled on an interior design decision? Let me know in the comments!
