Six Unconventional Night Stand Ideas | ORC Week Five, Master Bedroom | dreamyBEAST design

Week 5 of Calling It Home’s One Room Challenge, everybody! After last week’s paint color fiasco and eventual triumph, we hopped on a plane and won’t be home to work on the bedroom this week. I’ve got a couple projects lined up for when we get back, but for now we’re going to get imaginative and dive into the world of unconventional night stand ideas!

Wait, I Thought There Was No Space for a Night Stand Next to the Bed

You’re right! In my initial layout of the room, I had the bed snuggled up between the door to the bedroom and the door to the en suite bathroom. Again, here’s what that space looks like.

I knew that it was a  weird   crazy   possibly dumb  idea, but we wanted the bed to get as much light through the window as possible.

In a turn of events that shocked approximately no one, once we got the bed into that space, it was immediately clear that this plan wasn’t going to work out. Even though there was enough room for the bed, other issues appeared. You may all collectively gasp now.

No? No one?

Look at the pictures above, and see if you could have identified the following problems before hauling the bed across the room:

  • First, the person on one side of the bed was at serious risk of leaping out of bed and smacking into the edge of the open door. Not ideal.
  • Meanwhile, the person on the other side of the bed would be treated to the sweet, sweet smell of the bathroom first thing in the morning and right before bed. Even when it’s freshly cleaned, there’s no denying it has a certain bathroom smell. I’m envisioning nightmare after nightmare of being chased through the sewers.
  • Last, but most importantly, having the bed against this wall resulted in a huge awkward open space in the middle of the room. As my friend Jenna would say, “There’s so much room for activities!” But the room felt way too unbalanced.

Oh, also? There are no outlets near that wall at all. So. Derp.

We ended up moving the bed to the wall that the bedroom door is on. The flow of the room is much better, and you can see the window straight ahead on the opposite wall.

Damn it, I’m still counting it as a win!

Cue the Night Stand Shopping

Now that we had space for real night stands, I decided to indulge in some night stand shopping online. Bored with the same designs, I tracked down a few ideas for alternative pieces that would do the job a little differently. You won’t find any “drawers on four legs” here!

Some of these are just wild, in the best way. I love how half of them are super bohemian and alternative, and half of them are sleek and modern. Four of them are plant stands! Expanding the search beyond the traditional “night stand” really gives us some creative ways to solve the basic question of “Where do I put my phone and water bottle so I can reach them from bed?”

Coming Soon to My Master Bedroom…

What did I end up deciding to buy? Well, BoyfriendMan likes his current night stand. He’s a fan of the whole “drawer on four legs” deal, so I decided not to torture him with a new, interesting, design-y night stand… this time.

As for my night stand? After a lot of thought and shopping around my house, I decided to repurpose something I already have. Part of my goal for this master bedroom redesign was to spend as little money as possible, and since we’re planning on getting a new bed frame after we move, who knows what we’ll end up doing in the next bedroom?

It also makes me happy to embrace a mindset of “what I have is enough”. If I can find fresh joy and utility in using something I already have and love, why should I spend money on something new? What could possibly be better?

That being said, I can’t promise that I won’t snag a couple of those HAKU shelves before we leave Germany. With some love and a little paint they could really glam up a space, don’t you think?

I have a long way to go on this minimalism journey, guys. 😉
